Desert Queen

Two women of the Victorian era come to mind while reading this book. One is the woman of the title, Gertrude Bell; the other is Emily Hobhouse.

Both were women who wanted to be “of use,” but in the both cases it was happenstance rather than planning that led to the contributions they were to make to history.
