Desert Queen
Two women of the Victorian era come to mind while reading this book. One is the woman of the title, Gertrude Bell; the other is Emily Hobhouse.
Both were women who wanted to be “of use,” but in the both cases it was happenstance rather than planning that led to the contributions they were to make to history.

The Pillars of the Earth
Murder in the Cathedral depicted the ruthless assassination of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. With this as a denouement or nearly one Ken Follett begins his medieval tale of death, destruction, and hope in The Pillars of the Earth.
