The Name of the Rose

The translator starts Umberto Eco’s novel with a found manuscript that is so fascinating that the man who found it and who is traveling with his soon to be romantic partner has to make a translation of the 14th century manuscript.

Tallgrass

Sandra Dallas loves almost everything that farm life has to offer, except drudgery, rapid physical deterioration and impoverishment. Both those negative aspects and the positive ones of peacefulness, closeness and emotional satisfaction make up the background for this book.

The internment of Japanese-Americans was both a necessity and a disgrace. Dallas revives both aspects in her fictitious internment camp named “Tallgrass.”

For Whom the Bell Tolls

Hemingway knew Spain. And he knew war, having served in WW1, so it was no surprise that he would write something big about Spain’s Civil War.

Initially the characters are nameless and there is only the central theme that a bridge must be destroyed.

Shiloh, A Guide to the Battlefield

The Civil War was fought in many places, some of which are more familiar than others. But one stands out as more strategic and bloody than many of the better known battles.

Goonie’s Ghost

Carl Steadman joined the 82nd Airborne because of a firm belief that the United States had to stop Communism in Southeast Asia.

His memories of time “in country” continued to nag at him as he returned home. In a very deep and very dark place in his mind was a secret that he had to scrub out before The Nam would go away.

Taj Mahal

What the authors did in the Epilog provides a very good way to get involved in the essence of the mausoleum dedicated to Mumtaz Mahal and should have been an introduction rather than an epilog.

Sherman: A Soldier’s Life

Lee Kennett, an emeritus professor from the University of Georgia had various reasons for taking a look at the life of William Tecumseh Sherman. Foremost, I suspect, was a desire to get to know the man who had caused such destruction to his home state during the Civil War.

This book adds much to Sherman’s Memoirs, filling in blanks that the general decided were not that important to the story he wanted to tell.

Nicholas Nickleby

Charles Dickens invented one of the most disreputable characters in literature with Wackford Squeers, the erstwhile master of Dotheboys boarding school. Another arch villain that emerged from Dickens’ fertile mind was Ralph Nickleby.

Crime and Punishment

Fyodor Dostoevsky had three “R’s” in mind when he began Crime and Punishment; and they weren’t readin’, writin’ and ‘rithmetic. Rather they were the alliterative name of his protagonist: Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov.

Daring Young Men

Richard Reeves added the Berlin Airlift to his many investigative books. He provides names and places to add to the informative nature of his look at how the Allies fed the residents of Berlin after the Soviets decided to blockade the city.

Dracula

Even though Bram Stoker is only a memory his seminal work about a Transylvanian Count has entered the realm of iconic names, dates and places.

The story is undoubtedly familiar to most if not all movie goers, but the book is probably not quite on the tip of the tongue as is the movie. Some readers will imagine Bela Lugosi as the evil Count. Others will see any of the countless portrayers of the man from Transylvania.

The Moonstone

Wilkie Collins wanted to be as famous as his contemporary Charles Dickens, but as with many unfulfilled aspirations the latter was raised to the heavens to become a star in the literary world while Collins had to be content to be a successful author.

Chasing Icarus

The year is 1910. Great games are afoot. Balloonists intrepidly strike out with high hopes to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Others have short but more lucrative goals as they compete for a long distance prize. Other men who seek both fame and fortune in adaptations of the Wright Brothers flying machines congregate in Belmont Park, New York for the well-publicized flying meet in which prizes for altitude, distance and race winners will be offered.

Desert Queen

Two women of the Victorian era come to mind while reading this book. One is the woman of the title, Gertrude Bell; the other is Emily Hobhouse.

Both were women who wanted to be “of use,” but in the both cases it was happenstance rather than planning that led to the contributions they were to make to history.

The Pillars of the Earth

Murder in the Cathedral depicted the ruthless assassination of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. With this as a denouement or nearly one Ken Follett begins his medieval tale of death, destruction, and hope in The Pillars of the Earth.

The River of Doubt

Back in the day some kids wanted to be president, others wanted to be explorers but finding a boy who wanted to be both was akin to discovering the needle in the proverbial haystack.

One boy who grew up to be both was Theodore Roosevelt. He explored the west, became the hero of San Juan Hill during the Spanish American war, and found himself president of the United States after William McKinley was assassinated.

Throw Them All Out

How would you like the chance to legally trade on inside information (and make lots of money in the process)? And would you also like to improve the value of your property without spending any money? How about giving your friends access to money they didn’t have to pay back?

If your answer to those questions was “Yes!” then you should run for the Congress of the United States.
